Since 2019, Crossroads Community Supported Healthcare (DBA Barefoot Acupuncture Movement) has been working with community groups and small farmers in Nicaragua, and helping them build resilience to offer acupuncture for people living in rural and underserved areas. In 2021, our Barefoot Clinics in Central America, operated by local communities, will continue to offer relief both due to the pandemic and to survivors of Hurricane lota, where they offer NADA ear acupuncture in an area of the world where 30% of the population lack access to basic healthcare.
How Your Gift Supports Nicaraguan Healthcare
This fundraiser supports a part-time local health promoter to manage volunteers, local trainings, operations, as well as the distribution of critical supplies including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In addition, we will be dedicating funds to the buildout of their educational center at the Micelio farm, where our Barefoot Acupuncture School is based.
Partnership with Micelio Farm
This farm hosted our 2020 Nicaragua Solidarity Immersion program
in collaboration with a diverse number of community groups in this area of Carazo, Nicaragua. As a result of this program, dozens of health promoters in the region now offer Barefoot Acupuncture as a low-cost, accessible medical treatment in areas where few other health services exist. The Barefoot Doctor movement, started in China in the 1950s, traditionally centered around training farmers how to apply basic acupuncture protocols.
Your gift will help to make Barefoot Acupuncture and protocols like acudetox/NADA ear acupuncture possible in an area of the world where 30% of the population lack access to basic healthcare.
Micelio Farm also serves as a demonstration and educational program for local farmers to learn sustainable and organic farming techniques. During our delegations, we met local farmers who shared with us how this program, supported by the non-profit Hermanxs Por La Salud, has taught them how to stop using chemicals and pesticides in the area. Funding will support this eco-tourist center which supports agricultural and community development activities centered around the empowerment of rural and impoverished groups to improve their health, access to education, and overall quality of life.
Building Toward the Future
The construction of an educational center will be completed using natural building techniques many of which are indigenous to the area, offering employment for the people of Nicaragua. This project includes the build-out of dorms, a kitchen and dining area, and housing for the local farmworkers as well as for visitors and students in our Immersion Programs planned for the years ahead. We estimate the cost of construction will be around $75,000 dollars and your gift will help us raise a portion of these construction costs.
HermanXs Por Salud was founded by our Barefoot Collective members Tamara Trejo and Dr. JP Dedam.
